Are your miners “fit for work”? Have you asked them how they feel lately? Are they sick-and-tried and dangerous due to fatigue? Fatigue is a significant contributor to incidents, accidents, and deaths in mining workplaces around the world. It is difficult to observe fatigue because the very nature of “being observed” can tend to “wake” us up, thus masking the signs. Just because it is hard to observe the signs, fatigue is a safety topic that should not be avoided and should be discussed with safety teams and training provided all workers to detect and guard against fatigue. The causes and consequences of fatigue are very real in the Mining, Gas and Oil Industries. The consequences of fatigue can be catastrophic.
