Local fishermen in Samarinda Anchorage have been demonstrating against the Port Authority since 13th May 2018.
The demonstration is preventing vessel loading operations at Muara Berau Anchorage. According to reports, the fishermen are claiming adverse impact on fishing activities due to coal loading operations and demanding compensation for the loss of business.
A meeting was contacted on the 17th of May 2018 at 14:00 hrs (LT) between Local Authorities, Local Fishermen's Association, Local House of Representative, Indonesian Coal Mining Association, Governor, Floating Crane owners/operators and other representatives of the Governor's office.
Samarinda and Banjarmasin anchorages are major coal mining regions in Indonesia, so any port disruptions can have a big impact on coal supplies from the country.
According to local port agents reports, as of yesterday, around 35 oceangoing vessels are waiting for loading at anchorage.
